How we ranked tattoo studios in St. Louis

  • Range of styles and artists. We gave the most weight to studios whose rosters cover several styles, such as American traditional, black and grey, realism, fine line and Japanese, and that post artist portfolios so you can match an artist to your idea before you book.
  • Booking and walk-in access. We credited shops that spell out how walk-ins work, which days they take them, and how to book a consultation for bigger pieces.
  • Clear prices and policies. Shops that publish a minimum, deposit rules, touch-up policy and ID requirements ranked above shops that leave you guessing.
  • Licensing and hygiene. Missouri licenses both tattoo establishments and individual tattooists. We favored shops that describe their safety and hygiene practices and their rules for minors and sober clients.
  • Experience and staying power. We noted how long each shop has operated and whether it trains apprentices.
  • Extras. Piercing, cover-ups, permanent makeup and late or weekend hours earned extra credit.
  • Local spread. We included independent shops across South City, the Central West End, Downtown, University City, West and North County, and St. Charles County.
  • Google ratings. Where we show a Google rating, it is as of the noted date (October 2026), and it isn’t part of the ranking.

1. Enigma Tattoos & Body Piercings

Best for: First-timers, walk-ins and anyone who wants a tattoo, piercing or tooth gem in one inclusive shop.

Google rating: 4.5 stars from 590 reviews (as of October 2026)

Enigma Tattoos & Body Piercings sits at 6635 Delmar Boulevard in University City (63130), in the heart of the Delmar Loop and less than a mile from Washington University’s Danforth Campus. It describes itself as a woman- and minority-owned studio built to be boldly inclusive and judgment-free, and it backs that up with community work: the shop says it has raised thousands of dollars for local St. Louis charities, including animal rescues and trans rights groups, through events where 100% of profits go to the cause. Those events range from flash nights and night markets to goat yoga and anime screenings.

What puts Enigma first is how easy it makes getting tattooed. It is open seven days a week, noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, which are some of the latest hours on this list. Tattoos can be booked online or done as walk-ins, and the shop publishes its prices up front: a $100 tattoo minimum, piercings from $60 with standard jewelry, and tooth gems from $60. Returning clients get a complimentary one-time touch-up. Parking is free in the lot behind the building or on the street.

  • Tattoos: custom work, pre-drawn flash, walk-ins, cover-ups and reworks, and touch-ups.
  • Styles on the roster: traditional and American traditional, Japanese traditional, black and grey, realism and portraits, fine line, illustrative, lettering, anime and pop culture, and bright color work.
  • Piercings and tooth gems: walk-in only (about 15 minutes), with ear curation and gold and titanium jewelry. Tooth gems include Swarovski crystals, 18k gold charms and real diamonds.
  • Permanent makeup: microblading and powder brows, lip blushing, permanent eyeliner and brow corrections, by appointment.
  • Minors: 16 and up can be tattooed with notarized parental consent; ear, navel and nose piercings from age 13 with guardian consent ($20 minor fee).

2. Alchemy Tattoo Collective

Best for: Fine line and custom work in a woman-owned, LGBTQ+ inclusive studio.

Google rating: 4.9 stars from 339 reviews (as of October 2026)

Tattoo artist Chelsea Holloway founded Alchemy Tattoo Collective in 2015, and it describes itself as a woman-owned, LGBTQ+ inclusive studio. Its studio is at 4530 Olive Street in the Central West End (63108). Alchemy says its team of more than 20 artists covers fine line, bold traditional, black and grey, realism, illustrative and custom designs, plus artist-made flash and permanent makeup.

Alchemy stands out for training. Holloway runs the shop’s apprenticeship program, drawing on more than 15 years of tattooing, and the collective says the course has licensed and employed seven or more artists. Some artists take online bookings and others book through their portfolio pages. Walk-ins are accepted when artists are free; its homepage lists tattoo walk-ins Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it suggests calling ahead. Each walk-in starts with an on-site consultation on design and price, and big or complex pieces get scheduled for a later session. Call or text: (314) 899-0891.

3. Trader Bob’s Tattoo

Best for: Walk-in traditional tattoos from a long-established South City shop.

Google rating: 4.8 stars from 402 reviews (as of October 2026)

Trader Bob’s Tattoo calls itself St. Louis’ oldest tattoo shop and says it has been tattooing for 52 years. It is at 2529 S. Jefferson Avenue (63104) and is open noon to 8 p.m. every day. You don’t need an appointment: the shop takes walk-in tattoos and consultations all day, every day, first come, first served. Artists also manage their own appointments, which you can request through the site or each artist’s portfolio page.

Its FAQ is clear on the rules. The studio minimum is $100. You need to be 18 or older with a valid, unexpired government photo ID, and some, but not all, artists will tattoo minors by appointment with IDs for both the minor and parent and a consent form. Deposits are taken in person at the shop only; Trader Bob’s says it will never ask for a deposit online and won’t quote prices by phone, email or DM. It doesn’t pierce and sends piercing clients to its sister shops. Every August it hosts a Flash Revival fundraiser, and the 2026 event benefited RUNG for Women’s garden and food programs. How to choose a tattoo studio in St. Louis

Pick the artist, not just the shop

Most St. Louis studios are made up of artists with very different specialties. Browse each artist’s portfolio and look for healed work in the style you want, whether that’s bold American traditional at Tower Classic or Frenchtown, fine line at Alchemy, or realism and portraits at Self Inflicted. Many artists manage their own books, so the fastest way in is often to contact the artist directly through the shop’s site.

Check the license

Missouri’s Office of Tattooing, Body Piercing and Branding, part of the Division of Professional Registration, licenses both shops and tattooists. A shop can’t open until it has an establishment license, and the state inspects new shops before issuing one. Each tattooist needs a practitioner license, which requires bloodborne pathogen training, first aid and CPR, plus a supervised apprenticeship of at least 300 hours and 50 procedures, an accredited course, or three years of recent experience. Licenses can be checked by name on the state’s online license search.

Know the rules for minors and ID

Under Missouri law (RSMo 324.520), no one may tattoo or pierce a minor (other than an ear piercing) without the prior written informed consent of a parent or legal guardian, signed in front of the tattooist or a shop employee. The same law bans tattooing anyone who is drunk or high. Shops often add their own rules: Enigma tattoos clients 16 and up with notarized consent, Trader Bob’s requires a valid government photo ID for every client, and St. Louis Ink requires notarized forms for kids’ ear piercings. Bring ID either way.

Walk-in or appointment?

Walk-ins suit small to medium tattoos, flash and simple designs you already have references for. Trader Bob’s takes walk-ins all day, every day; Enigma, TRX and Frenchtown take them seven days a week; and Tower Classic says it always has an artist for walk-ins. For sleeves, back pieces, cover-ups or anything detailed, book a consultation. Alchemy and Ragtime both say large or complex designs get scheduled for a separate session.

Budget for minimums, deposits and tips

Expect a shop minimum. Enigma, Trader Bob’s and Tower Classic all publish $100. Most shops quote larger pieces only after seeing the placement in person. Deposits hold your spot and are usually applied to the final price but not refunded if you skip the appointment. Tower Classic asks $50 for single designs and $100 for bigger sessions. Be wary of anyone asking for a deposit through a DM: Trader Bob’s says it will never take deposits online. Ask about tipping; Trader Bob’s, for one, says tips are appreciated but never expected.

Prepare for the session

  • Get a good night’s sleep, eat a meal and stay hydrated. Trader Bob’s recommends a snack with sugar or protein.
  • Show up sober. Missouri law prohibits tattooing someone under the influence.
  • Ask your artist before using numbing cream. Some artists won’t tattoo over it, because it can make skin harder to work.
  • Stay home if you’re sick and reschedule.
  • Limit yourself to one guest, if any. Many shops leave it up to the artist.

Aftercare basics

Follow your own artist’s aftercare instructions, since they vary from shop to shop. As an example, Trader Bob’s tells clients to remove the bandage after one to two hours, wash gently twice a day with antibacterial soap, use a thin layer of ointment for the first few days and then unscented lotion, keep the tattoo out of the sun for two weeks, and avoid swimming and baths for at least two weeks. Don’t scratch or pick at peeling skin, and use sunscreen once it’s healed so the colors last. Many shops, including Enigma, offer free touch-ups if a spot heals light.

Red flags

  • No visible license, no street address, or a “studio” in someone’s kitchen.
  • Requests to pay a deposit through a DM or payment app before you’ve met anyone.
  • Firm prices quoted for a large piece without anyone seeing the placement.
  • An artist who won’t show healed work in the style you want.
  • A willingness to tattoo minors without a parent present, or to tattoo someone who has been drinking.

Bottom line: Of the tattoo studios St. Louis offers, start with Enigma Tattoos & Body Piercings for daily walk-ins, posted prices, free touch-ups and a welcoming shop for every style. Alchemy Tattoo Collective is the pick for fine line work, Trader Bob’s and Tower Classic for traditional walk-ins, and Self Inflicted Studios for large custom projects. North and West County and St. Charles residents have strong options at St. Louis Ink, Thirteen Roses and Frenchtown Tattoo Co.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tattoo studio in St. Louis?

Enigma Tattoos & Body Piercings in the Delmar Loop is our top pick for 2026. It is open seven days a week with walk-ins every day, publishes a $100 tattoo minimum, offers a free one-time touch-up, and has artists covering traditional, black and grey, realism, fine line, anime and color work, plus piercings, tooth gems and permanent makeup. Alchemy Tattoo Collective, Trader Bob's Tattoo and Self Inflicted Studios are also strong choices.

How much does a tattoo cost in St. Louis?

Price depends on size, style, placement and the artist. Several St. Louis shops publish a $100 minimum, including Enigma Tattoos, Trader Bob's Tattoo and Tower Classic Tattooing. Most shops quote larger pieces in person after a consultation, and Trader Bob's won't give estimates by phone, email or DM.

How old do you have to be to get a tattoo in Missouri?

Missouri law (RSMo 324.520) bars tattooing a minor, meaning anyone under 18, without the prior written informed consent of a parent or legal guardian, signed in front of the tattooist or an employee of the shop. Shops can set stricter rules. Enigma tattoos clients 16 and up with notarized parental consent, and at Trader Bob's only some artists tattoo minors, by appointment.

Do St. Louis tattoo shops take walk-ins?

Many do. Trader Bob's takes walk-ins all day, every day; Enigma, TRX and Frenchtown Tattoo Co. take walk-ins seven days a week; and Tower Classic says an artist is always available for walk-ins. Alchemy and Ragtime take walk-ins when artists have openings, so call ahead. Walk-ins work best for small to medium pieces and flash.

Do tattoo artists need a license in Missouri?

Yes. Missouri's Office of Tattooing, Body Piercing and Branding licenses both shops and practitioners. A shop needs an establishment license, which isn't issued until the state inspects it. A tattooist needs a practitioner license, which requires bloodborne pathogen training, first aid and CPR, and either a 300-hour apprenticeship with at least 50 procedures, an accredited course, or three years of recent experience. You can check a license with the state's online license search.

Do I need to pay a deposit for a tattoo appointment?

Usually, yes. Tower Classic Tattooing asks for a $50 deposit for single designs and $100 for larger sessions, which goes toward the final price and isn't refunded if you cancel or don't show. Trader Bob's takes deposits only in person and says it will never ask for one online, which is a good rule of thumb for spotting scams.

Can I get a tattoo cover-up in St. Louis?

Yes. Enigma, Ragtime, Thirteen Roses and Self Inflicted all list cover-ups or reworks. Book a consultation so the artist can see the old tattoo in person, because size, ink density and color all affect what can be covered.

Which St. Louis tattoo shops also do piercings?

Enigma, TRX Tattoos & Piercing, Thirteen Roses, Frenchtown Tattoo Co. and St. Louis Ink all pierce. Enigma's piercings start at $60 with standard jewelry and are walk-in only. Trader Bob's doesn't pierce.
